Bundle discount is not displayed in the cart

Two different problems share this symptom — a discount that applies but isn't printed on the cart page, and a discount that never applies at all.

Written by Andrey Gadashevich

Your bundle discount is calculated by a Shopify Functions discount function that runs on the cart, registered as a Shopify automatic discount. It is part of Shopify's own discount system rather than something drawn by your theme, so a theme cannot strip it and no theme-side install is needed to make it work.

That matters for this symptom, because "not displayed in the cart" turns out to be two unrelated situations. Sort out which one you have before you change anything.

Which one is it?

Add the bundle to the cart as a shopper would and go through to checkout.

The checkout total is discounted, but the cart page doesn't mention it. The discount is working. What's missing is a display line on the cart page, which is off by default — see the next section.

The checkout total is not discounted either. The discount genuinely isn't applying. Skip to "When the discount never applies."

Showing the saving on the cart page

Printing the bundle saving on the cart page is a free custom installation rather than a switch you flip. Go to Settings → Installation → Custom Features and request Display bundle discount on the cart page; our team installs a small snippet in your theme.

It only has an effect when Skip cart is off. With Skip cart on, multi-product bundles go straight to checkout and shoppers never see the cart page at all, so the snippet has nothing to show.

There is no "you have a bundle in your cart" banner or badge feature. The only bundle message shown to a shopper is the confirmation that appears inside the widget itself right after Add to cart.

When the discount never applies

There are four real causes, and none of them is your theme. Work through them in this order.

You're over Shopify's limit of 25 active automatic discounts. Shopify caps every store at 25, and bundles beyond the cap stop discounting. Your dashboard shows a banner saying so. Reduce the number of active bundles or other automatic discounts in your Shopify admin, then reload the app.

There's no such banner, and nothing has ever discounted. The one-time discount registration the app runs on install may have failed quietly. Contact support and mention that your bundles show on the storefront, no discount ever applies at checkout, and there's no discount-limit banner on your dashboard — this needs the discount registration re-run on our side.

The cart was assembled outside the widget. With Automatic bundle assembly in cart on — the default — the discount function merges any qualifying lines even if the shopper never touched the widget. With it off, it considers only lines added through the widget, so a cart the shopper built product by product, or a Shopify POS cart, isn't discounted. If you're not sure of its current state, contact support and ask them to check "Automatic bundle assembly in cart" on your shop.

A required component was removed from the cart. On bundles without their own single cart line, removing a required component removes the bundle discount by design. Shopify bundles added as a single product keep their components grouped, so nothing can be removed individually.

Things that don't affect the discount

Because the discount is Shopify's own automatic discount, applied to the cart before the shopper reaches payment, these make no difference to whether it applies:

  • the theme your store runs, or any expert theme installation

  • the payment method the shopper chooses

  • the storefront's currency or language — a Functions discount carries through to checkout and order confirmation emails in whatever currency and language the storefront is already showing

If bundles are visible on the storefront and priced correctly in the widget but the checkout total is wrong, the cause is in the list above, not in your theme code.
