Uncombined quantity, Optional products and quantity settings

The part of MBC Bundles that gets misunderstood most often — especially why Uncombined quantity and the Quantity selector do not combine, and what to use instead.

Written by Andrey Gadashevich

Item quantity

Where: Offer tab → Bundle products card — the group footer on Product groups, or the "Qty" box on the row on Separate products.

Item quantity sets how many units of that slot the bundle contains. It only appears while Uncombined quantity is off; once you tick Uncombined quantity, this field is replaced by that many separate rows you edit individually. It accepts a whole number from 1 to 999 — a value outside that range is ignored and the field reverts when it loses focus. With Item quantity above 1 and Uncombined quantity off, the shopper sees a single row with an "x3"-style badge and 3 units of the chosen variant land in the cart.

Uncombined quantity

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card.

Uncombined quantity appears as soon as any slot's Item quantity is above 1, or while the setting is already on. It's never offered on Volume discount or Buy-X-Get-Y bundles.

What it does. Uncombined quantity splits a slot with a quantity above 1 into that many independent rows, each with its own variant selector, its own product choice inside a group, and its own cart line. With it off, those units collapse into a single row: one variant chosen once, with that many units of it. With it on, a slot of quantity 3 becomes 3 separate rows, and each row resolves one product and one variant of its own — three copies of a T-shirt can be size 6, size 10 and size 12. It works the same way on both Separate products and Product groups; on Product groups, each uncombined copy keeps the full resource list of the group, so each copy gets its own product picker as well as its own variant selector — three copies of a group can end up being three different products.

There's no validation message of its own for this setting, but it does multiply how many combinations a bundle that creates a Shopify product must generate, and that count is capped at 2048 (see the article on exclusions and limits for the full mechanics).

Uncombined quantity together with the Quantity selector — read this before promising anything

These two settings do different jobs and do not combine. The number of independent variant selectors a bundle shows is fixed by how many copies of the product you built into the bundle yourself, using Item quantity and Uncombined quantity. The shopper's own stepper — the Quantity selector — only changes how many units of the one variant already chosen on a row are taken. It never adds another variant selector, no matter how high the shopper raises it.

This means: a shopper-chosen count with a separate variant selection for each copy is not possible. If you want "the shopper decides how many children are in the order, and each child picks their own size," you can't build it that way — you have to decide the number of copies yourself when you set up the bundle (via Item quantity + Uncombined quantity), and the shopper then picks a variant on each of those fixed rows. The Quantity selector is not a workaround for this — it looks superficially similar but does something else entirely, so don't reach for it here.

Uncombined quantity together with Optional products

Unlike the Quantity selector, Optional products does combine with Uncombined quantity, and this combination is the answer to "can the shopper take fewer copies than I set." Because each copy becomes its own row once Uncombined quantity is on, each copy also carries its own Optional checkbox. Mark the first copy required and the rest Optional, and the shopper can take anywhere from one copy up to the number you built in. This is a supported, widely used setup.

Default variant

Where: Offer tab → Bundle products card, inline on a product row, opening the "Select default variant" modal.

Appears when a product has more than one variant, on Separate products, Product groups, and Volume discount / Buy-X-Get-Y rows alike. Inside the modal, once you pick one variant every other variant greys out, because exactly one can be chosen. Default variant pins which variant of that product the widget shows first on that row; leave it unset and the widget picks a variant using this order: your pinned default, then a variant no other row has already taken, then the first available variant, then simply the first one.

A product whose only variant is titled "Default Title" shows no variant line at all. With nothing pinned, the row reads "Default variant: the first available one."

Optional products

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card.

Turning Optional products on lets the shopper decide which of the bundle's items to actually buy. It adds an Optional and Pre-selected checkbox to each slot, plus the Minimum items required / Maximum items allowed fields. It appears on every structure that shows the Product settings card, and it's available on every plan under current pricing (Free, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Tier 4 and Enterprise) with no restriction — it's only withheld, with a Pro badge shown while it's off, on a legacy plan generation.

Customers choose products: With checkboxes / From a pop-up

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card, under Optional products.

This choice only appears while Optional products is on, the structure is Separate products, and the bundle type is Widget-only. In every other combination, you'll see a banner reading "Mark above the products that are optional." instead, and optional items are marked with inline checkboxes on the product rows themselves.

Choosing "From a pop-up" forces Applies to = Bundle subtotal amount, turns the Free gift discount group off, and rewrites a legacy Free-products discount type to Percentage the next time you save.

Optional (checkbox on a product row)

Where: Offer tab → Bundle products card, on a product row or group.

Appears while Optional products is on — on Separate products only in "With checkboxes" mode, and on Product groups always. Tick Optional on a slot to let the shopper drop it from the bundle; leave it unticked and that slot is always included. Optional slots also count toward the validation rule "Max can't be lower than the number of required groups."

This checkbox locks while "Pre-selected" is unticked for that same slot. Re-tick Pre-selected to unlock Optional again.

Pre-selected

Where: Offer tab → Bundle products card, checkbox next to Optional on the same row.

Appears once a slot is marked Optional. A pre-selected optional product arrives already ticked in the widget — its price is already included in the bundle total — so the shopper opts out of it rather than into it, rather than starting from zero.

Quantity selector

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card.

The Quantity selector is offered on Widget-only bundles (Create a product off) and lets the shopper raise or lower the quantity of each item inside the widget with a +/- stepper on each row. Turning it on adds the Minimum and Maximum items fields. It's available on every plan under current pricing, including Free — it's only gated, with a Pro badge shown while off, on a legacy plan generation.

What the stepper does not do: it multiplies the quantity of the variant already selected on a row. It does not give each added unit its own variant selector — see "Uncombined quantity together with the Quantity selector," above. The app's own warning note ("the 'Uncombined quantity' and 'Optional products' settings significantly increase the number of possible combinations") is a caution about volume against the combination cap, not a statement that these settings are blocked together.

Minimum items required

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card.

Appears while the Quantity selector is on, or Optional products is on. This is the smallest number of items the shopper must keep in the bundle for the discount to apply — Add to cart stays blocked, or the discount doesn't apply, until that many items are selected. Accepts 1–999. You'll see "The specified value is greater than the number of products, add products or change the value of this field" when Optional products is on, the Quantity selector is off, Apply to isn't All store, and the products you've added add up to less than this number.

Maximum items allowed

Where: Offer tab → Product settings card.

Also appears while the Quantity selector is on, or Optional products is on. Choose Limited and type a number to cap how many items a shopper can put in the bundle — each row's + button stops once the total reaches the cap. The number box itself is hidden (not greyed out) while "No limit" is selected. The cap must be at least Minimum items required and at least the number of compulsory (non-Optional) slots; required groups counts every slot when Optional products is off. Accepts 1–999, with "Max can't be lower than min" and "Max can't be lower than the number of required groups" as the blocking messages.

This field is also what re-opens the Sale price and Amount off discount types when the item count would otherwise be unbounded — see the article on choosing a discount and pricing type for the full table of when each type is available.

Two related quirks worth knowing

"Increasing the quantity applies to the same selected product from the group, not different products." You'll see this blue note inside a product group whenever that group's Item quantity is above 1 (dismissing it hides it for good). It describes the combined case only — while Uncombined quantity is off, raising a slot's quantity buys several copies of the one product and variant the shopper picked in that slot. It does not mean different products or variants per copy are impossible — it's just describing what happens when the box is left unticked. Tick Uncombined quantity and each copy becomes its own row with its own product and variant, exactly as described above.

Two groups holding the same product or collection merge automatically. While Uncombined quantity is off, adding the same product or the same collection into two different groups merges them into a single slot with a higher Item quantity — there's no warning or confirmation, and no rule in the editor blocks it. This is the most common cause of "the app deleted my group" reports. Tick Uncombined quantity to keep the two slots independent, each with its own product picker and variant selector and its own cart line. We haven't found a documented error message tied specifically to this merge, but if you see one when it happens, note its exact wording and pass it along to support — it's a case worth capturing precisely.
